Strat-O-Matic Fielding Value Calculator

Based on David C. Madsen's methodology from When To Play the Slick Fielder Over the Heavy Hitter. Enter each player's batting stats and SOM fielding rating to compare their combined offensive and defensive value. Note: Catchers are excluded (their throwing/PB ratings can't be captured by this method). The author recommends only considering differences in PLAY > .050 as significant.

OBP weighting: Hitting numbers use a 1.8× multiplier on OBP (OPS = 1.8×OBP + SLG) to better reflect the value of getting on base. The fielding side (FOPS) does not yet apply this multiplier — it will be added to FOPS in a future update so the hitting and fielding scales stay comparable.

Player 1

OPS (1.8×OBP + SLG)—
FOPS (fielding OPS from table)—
EF (equalization factor)—
EF × FOPS (fielding penalty)—
PLAY (OPS − EF×FOPS)—

PLAY = combined hitting + fielding value, expressed in OPS units.

PVP (PLAY vs. this pitcher) —

PVP = OPS + (0.722 × POPS) − (EF × FOPS)

Player 2

OPS (1.8×OBP + SLG)—
FOPS (fielding OPS from table)—
EF (equalization factor)—
EF × FOPS (fielding penalty)—
PLAY (OPS − EF×FOPS)—

PLAY = combined hitting + fielding value, expressed in OPS units.

PVP (PLAY vs. this pitcher) —

PVP = OPS + (0.722 × POPS) − (EF × FOPS)

Comparison: Player 1 vs Player 2

PDiff (PLAY₁ − PLAY₂)—
PVPDiff (PVP₁ − PVP₂)—

Positive = Player 1 is better overall. Negative = Player 2 is better overall. Differences < 0.050 (50 OPS points) are generally not significant — consider batting order position or other factors.

Higher EF = fielding matters more at that position relative to hitting.
